How I Met: Holly
I first met Holly on the day I decided to die, it was the spring of 1953, I was 9 years old. I carried a cinder block and a length of rope with me on the bus to Belmont harbor, walked out to the end of the pier, and sat on a bench collecting myself. I first met Luke at the beginning of the Bronze Age, circa 3000 BCE. He sat by a river at night. Luke looked up to the domed night sky with the yet to be named Milky Way painting a swath of dark red almost black swirls straight through the center from horizon to horizon. He imagined himself sitting comfortable by a river of his own gentle winter humour perched on a cleft of gray brain matter...
How I Met: James Y.
I first met James Y. in 1929. His family was sharecropping my family land in rural Arkansas, mostly tobacco but some potatoes. His mother was 9 months full pregnant and eager to get James born so she could get back to tending the crops with his father. It was fall 2 weeks already when I stopped by the small one room cabin the whole family shared. James’ mother was sitting with her head down...
